I just bought a thing..the biggest baddest iMac I could reasonably afford. I think I want to run iracing or something like it. Has anyone here tried this and have any tips on hardware? I hope to not have to run a virtual windows thing.

You wouldn’t get very far running Windows in a VM anyways as you’ll be losing out on GPU performance.

Came here to say this. If you do run Windows use bootcamp.

For iRacing, you’ll need a steering wheel. I don’t know if it supports osx though.

they should. I mean there is a max OS release of the game so I assume there is support for that

It’ll work then. I didn’t know they had a release for Mac. How well it’ll run is a different story.

Ha ha I used to have one of those “back in the day”

Unfortunately, you need to dual boot windows using boot camp. Then once you finally setup everything in windows, install the game of choice and play.
Fyi, I have both macs and windows machines, macs are just pure design/style and cost hundreds more for an equivalent windows machine. Unless you are fully engaged with apple everything, there is no point.

Or if there happens to be an osx version, install that. It’s rare though.

This is true, you need to dual boot windows

Yeah I have been a mac user for nearly 20 years now and my wife is who is a web application developer is pretty much 100% Mac. So Mac it is for us. I have always been a console gamer but racing sims like iracing appeal a lot to me.

I would argue that Apple makes a better laptop short of a full on gaming computer (which I’ve never understood the desire for a 15 lb laptop with a battery that only lasts for an hour.)

That’s good to know, this computer is more for music production, photo, graphic and web design. I am not sure how much gaming duty it will see

Fair enough, I get that. You know what to do then.

and they excel at all of that, just not so much at games.

There’s a Mac release for iRacing, it should work just fine. Surprisingly it doesn’t run as well on my wife’s year old Macbook Pro as it does on my shitty little ultrabook, but that may have had to do with being an early release of the OSx version when I last played it or something on iRacing’s end.

I used to run Simraceway off my iMac 2010-ish. I had Windows 7 dual booted, as the game only ran on Windows. Worked fine for me.
